There are a lot of ways to run a nonprofit. You can build one around data, around outcomes, around strategic frameworks and measurable impact reports. All of those things have value. All of those things matter.
But Dorcas Destiny International was not built that way. DDI was built on faith. And understanding that is essential to understanding why the organization works the way it does, why it goes where it goes, and why it keeps showing up long after the easy enthusiasm of a new initiative has worn off.
Where the Name Comes From
The name Dorcas is not accidental. In the New Testament, Dorcas was a woman known for her acts of charity and her care for the poor. When she died, the community that had depended on her mourned deeply, and the widows she had served wept and showed the garments she had made for them. She was, in the truest sense, someone whose presence made a tangible difference in the lives of people who had very little.
That is the spirit DDI carries into Kenya. Not a spirit of pity, but of presence. Not charity as a transaction, but care as a way of life.
A Faith That Requires Action
DDI’s foundation is rooted in a belief that faith without works is incomplete. The guiding conviction is not complicated: if you see someone hungry, you feed them. If you see a child without access to school, you open the door. If you see a mother with no way to provide for her family, you give her the tools to change that.
This is not passive belief. It is faith expressed through showing up, rolling up sleeves, and doing the hard, unglamorous, necessary work of caring for people in real need.
The verse that anchors DDI’s mission comes from Matthew 25: I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in. For DDI, this is not a metaphor. It is a job description.
Faith That Does Not Exclude
One of the most important things to understand about DDI’s faith foundation is what it does not mean. It does not mean that services are conditional on belief. It does not mean that a child must pray a certain prayer to receive a meal, or that a mother must attend a particular church to access skills training.
DDI serves children and women in Kenya regardless of their religious background or affiliation. The faith that drives the work is internal to the organization. The impact of that work is available to anyone in need.
This is what integrity looks like in faith-based service. The motivation is rooted in conviction. The outcome belongs to everyone.
Why Faith Makes the Difference in Hard Places
Kenya is not an easy place to do this work. Turkana County, where DDI is working to establish the Beloved Destiny Children’s Home, has a poverty rate of over 80%. The slums of Nairobi, where hundreds of the children DDI serves live, are places where need is constant and resources are scarce. Mission trips require crossing oceans, navigating uncertainty, and investing in relationships that take years to build.
What keeps an organization going in conditions like these is not strategy alone. It is something deeper. A belief that the work matters beyond what can be measured. A conviction that every child has inherent worth and dignity, not because of what they can produce or become, but simply because of who they are.
That is the faith DDI brings to Kenya. And it is what makes the difference between an organization that shows up once and one that keeps coming back.
A Community of Believers Behind the Mission
DDI does not carry this work alone. Behind every meal served, every scholarship funded, and every mission trip taken is a community of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and partners who share the same foundation.
Churches like Beloved Church in Lena, Illinois have stepped in to make entire initiatives possible. Individual sponsors have committed to children they have never met, simply because they believe every child deserves a chance. Mission trip volunteers have given their time and resources to go and serve in communities most of them had never heard of before.
This is faith made visible. Not in grand gestures, but in consistent, faithful, practical acts of generosity.
