It is easy to think of a nonprofit as the people who founded it, the donors who fund it, and the volunteers who visit. But the work that happens every single day, the meals served, the children taught, the families supported, does not happen because of any of those people alone. It happens because of the local team on the ground in Kenya who show up for the mission every morning, long after the mission trip volunteers have flown home.
At Dorcas Destiny International, the local Kenyan team is not a supporting cast. They are the mission.
Why a Local Team Changes Everything
There is a significant difference between an organization that operates in a community and one that is rooted in it. DDI has always understood that sustainable change requires local leadership, local knowledge, and local relationships. A team member who grew up near the communities DDI serves understands those communities in ways no outsider ever fully can. They know the families by name. They know the history. They know which child has been absent for three days and what that likely means.
This is what makes DDI’s model work. They are the eyes, the hands, and the daily presence that keeps every program running and every child accounted for.
Who the Team Serves
DDI’s local Kenyan team works across multiple partner schools and communities, including Kings Academy, St. Mary’s Kings Academy, Neema and Hekima School, and Genesis Junior Centre. These schools serve approximately 737 children, all of whom are vulnerable, some of whom are orphans, being raised by widows, or coming from extremely poor households in the slums of Baba Dogo, Embakasi Tassia, and Soweto in Nairobi.
Each member of the local team plays a vital role in providing education, care, and support to the most vulnerable members of the community. DDI team members ensure that children are not just in school but actually learning. Support staff manage meals, track attendance, and flag concerns. Local leadership coordinates with DDI’s US-based team and communicates the needs on the ground clearly and consistently.
Teachers Who Go Beyond Teaching
In the schools DDI supports, teachers do far more than deliver a curriculum. They are often the first adults to notice when a child is struggling at home. They are the ones who make sure a quiet child in the back of the classroom is not quietly disappearing.
DDI has invested in its teachers through the Education Crosswalk program, a virtual professional development initiative that connects educators and professionals in the United States with teachers at DDI’s partner schools in Kenya. Topics have included leadership development, classroom management, self-care, music education, identifying and supporting children with disabilities, and motor skills development.
This investment in teachers is an investment in every child those teachers will ever teach. A well-supported, well-equipped teacher is one of the most powerful forces for change in any community.
The Bridge Between Two Continents
When DDI’s US team and mission trip volunteers arrive in Kenya, they are not arriving into a vacuum. They are stepping into relationships, structures, and programs that the local Kenyan team has been sustaining all year long. The local team is the bridge that makes international partnership meaningful rather than performative.
This is also why DDI’s mission trips feel different from other volunteer experiences. Volunteers are not coming to lead. They are coming to serve alongside people who already know exactly what needs to be done. The local team shapes the visit, sets the priorities, and ensures that every hour of volunteer time goes where it is most needed.
