Not every place is easy to reach. Not every place makes the news. Lodwar, Kenya is both of those things, and it is exactly where Dorcas Destiny International is working to establish the Beloved Destiny Children’s Home.
To understand why this matters, you have to understand where Lodwar is, what life looks like there, and what it will mean for the children waiting for this home to become a reality.
A Place the World Has Largely Passed By
Lodwar is the capital of Turkana County, located in the far northwest of Kenya. It is the largest town in the region, with a population of just under 83,000 people, sitting in one of the most remote and resource-scarce parts of the country.
Turkana County has the highest overall poverty rate in Kenya at 82.7%. That is not a rounding error. It means that more than eight out of every ten people in Turkana County cannot meet their basic food and non-food needs. Chronic drought, extreme heat, limited infrastructure, and generational poverty have made Lodwar one of the most underserved communities in all of East Africa. For children growing up here, especially those without parents or stable caregivers, the odds are stacked in every direction.
Turkana County recorded nearly 9,800 orphaned children in 2019, making it one of the highest concentrations of orphaned children in the country. These are children growing up without the one thing every child needs most: a safe adult who shows up for them every single day. illuminAid
Why DDI Is Going There
DDI has always worked where the need is greatest and the reach of others is thinnest. Lodwar fits both descriptions.
The decision to establish the Beloved Destiny Children’s Home in Lodwar is not accidental. It is the result of years of relationship-building, on-the-ground presence, and a clear-eyed look at where a residential home for vulnerable children would make the most profound and lasting difference.
Lodwar does not have the infrastructure of Nairobi. It does not have the visibility of larger Kenyan cities. What it does have is a generation of children who are waiting for someone to show up and stay.
DDI intends to be that presence.
What the Beloved Destiny Children’s Home Will Be
In partnership with Beloved Church in Lena, Illinois, DDI is working to establish a long-term residential home for children in Lodwar who are currently without safe, stable housing. This will not be a temporary shelter or a short-term program. It will be a permanent home, built for the kind of sustained care that actually changes the trajectory of a child’s life.
When fully established, the Beloved Destiny Children’s Home will provide:
- Safe, permanent housing for children who currently have nowhere stable to go
- Daily nutritious meals addressing one of the most immediate and urgent needs in a county where food poverty is severe
- Access to education in a region where only half of children currently attend school
- Mentorship and emotional support for children who have experienced loss, instability, and hardship beyond their years
- Life skills and personal development so that every child who grows up in this home steps into adulthood with confidence and capability
This home will not just shelter children. It will raise them.
